The Indiana Fever finally gave their fans something to celebrate after defeating the Seattle Storm 89-78 on Sunday afternoon. But while the win itself grabbed a lot of headlines, one unexpected Sophie Cunningham moment somehow became one of the biggest talking points from the game. And while the Fever guard clearly enjoyed it, not everyone online felt the same way.

Cunningham is widely known for her shooting ability, toughness, and energy on the court. But one thing she is definitely not known for is shot blocking. To put that into perspective, the veteran guard has averaged just 0.2 blocks per game throughout her WNBA career and has recorded only 48 total blocks across eight seasons.

So when Cunningham suddenly came flying in to block a shot from Mackenzie Holmes during the second quarter while Indiana already held an 11-point lead, she understandably stopped to breathe the moment in. However, things went south after the Fever’s official X account posted the clip with the caption, “nice block Soph 😉

That immediately brought criticism from some fans, with many calling the celebration too much for a regular-season block. But Sophie Cunningham never seemed too bothered by any of it and quickly responded in her own way.

“HAHAHA ‘act like you’ve been there before’….. okay but the last I did this was against my 2 year old niece. LET ME LIVE!!!!” Cunningham wrote.

Honestly, that response only made fans love the moment even more. But while the viral block grabbed attention online, it was far from the only thing Cunningham contributed during Indiana’s first home win of the 2026 season.

The 6-foot-1 guard played one of her best games since joining the Fever and finished the game with 17 points and 3 rebounds in 25 minutes as she led her team to a win after the Fever opened their season with two frustrating losses at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

But unlike the previous games, the Fever looked far more balanced this time.

Caitlin Clark once again controlled the game with 21 points and 10 assists, while Kelsey Mitchell added another 17 points of her own. But it was Cunningham’s aggressiveness that gave Indiana an extra spark that completely shifted the pace at different points in the game.

Still, despite her strong performance, there are clearly areas where she can improve moving forward. The veteran attempted five shots from beyond the arc but converted only one of them, finishing the game shooting 20% from three-point range. That is obviously not the kind of efficiency Indiana will want consistently from one of its floor spacers.

But at the same time, it is still extremely early in the 2026 season, and the Fever are slowly starting to look much more connected as a team on both ends of the floor. So if this game against Seattle was any indication, Indiana may finally be starting to settle into the identity fans expected from them entering the season.

What’s next for Sophie Cunningham and the Fever?

With this win in their bag, the Indiana Fever now sits at 2-2 in the ongoing season. The two losses they have suffered so far came against the:

So the Fever are clearly not getting blown out by their opponents. In fact, their offense has looked dangerous almost every single night. In both the games they lost, they crossed the 100-point mark. So where does the issue lie? It’s their defense. The Fever gives up an alarming number of points in the paint.

“Our biggest room for improvement is when things aren’t going well, we still need to be able to defend and get stops,” Caitlin Clark said after a loss to the Mystics.

That is exactly why the win over Seattle felt important. Not only did Indiana finally protect home court, but they also looked far more connected defensively while limiting mistakes during key stretches of the game.

Now, they will try to build on that momentum when they lock horns with the Portland Fire on May 20.

Now, Portland is still an expansion team trying to figure out its place in the league. So this could also become the perfect opportunity for Sophie Cunningham to fully find her shooting rhythm again after finishing just 1-of-5 from beyond the arc against Seattle.

So when the Fever locks horns with the Fire next, make sure to keep an eye on her.
