In the Indiana Fever’s opening night loss to the Dallas Wings, it was a Caitlin Clark moment that got most of the spotlight. It unfolded during the game when the Fever guard took a locker-room tour, raising concerns about a possible injury. Although Clark had denied any such rumors, stating they were just for her back stiffness and recovery, sports columnist Jason Whitlock isn’t buying it.
Speaking on his Fearless With Jason Whitlock podcast, he clearly raised doubts over Clark’s fitness. He remarked that there isn’t anything wrong with Clark, that the Fever is hesitant to put it into the public domain. “There is something wrong with Caitlin Clark,” Whitlock said. “I think the WNBA knows it, the Fever knows it, and the television partner knows it. Week 1, game 1, and you got a back brace, and you’re playing limited minutes. They know that there’s something wrong with CC.”
“Stephanie White is not incompetent. The Indiana Fever are not incompetent. They just have more information about her health than the public does, and they’re making decisions based on that information that we don’t know,” he added further.
Now, from her time on the court, Clark didn’t show any flashes of injury struggles. Of course, she didn’t play the entire 40 minutes of the game, and it’s quite natural considering she’s coming off an injury-laden season. The on-court movements, too, didn’t show any great concern in that aspect, as the layups were consistent, and so were her fast movements in the perimeters.
The only concern was her traveling to the Fever locker room twice during the game. The Fever head coach, Stephanie White, also gave Clark’s recovery explanation a nod in this regard, remarking that she wouldn’t have played for about 31 minutes if she were injured.
Furthermore, Clark was also seen wearing a heat therapy pad during her time on the bench. And subsequently, in the press conference, she denied any connection to the injury.
But Whitlock believes and even emphasizes that Clark isn’t completely fit, and the franchise is quite aware of it. The veteran sports columnist even remarked that drafting a point guard in Raven Johnson might be a perfect hint that the Fever needs to keep replacements ready for Clark, courtesy of that injury.
“If Caitlin Clark is damaged good, drafting a point guard in the first round makes sense,” Whitlock said. “How do you have Michael Jordan as your shooting guard and then in year three let’s draft another shooting guard in the first round? That’s a red flag. That’s a clue.”
It is important to understand that Clark and Johnson have very different profiles. CC is more of a perennially good shooter with elite playmaking capabilities. On the other hand, Johnson aligns more with a defensive approach. So, Johnson might not be a like-for-like replacement for Clark.

And secondly, it wasn’t just the Indiana Fever who drafted a player of the same position despite having one. We saw the Dallas Wings do it when they went for Azzi Fudd despite having Arike Ogunbowale as an SG. In both these cases, it seems like adding more depth rather than replacing their former counterparts.
More importantly, regarding Whitlock’s limited minutes comment, Clark played the second-most minutes in the Wings game (31), just behind Kelsey Mitchell (33). Thus, all of it directs towards a positive direction for Caitlin Clark’s fitness.
But CC’s multiple tours to the locker room during the course of the night might still put her fitness under the microscope a bit. Amid all this chaos, the Fever fans have clearly gotten what they wanted to hear from the Indiana Fever’s coaching staff.
Stephanie White Comes Clean on Caitlin Clark and Other Players Moving to the Locker Room
Days after denying any injury concerns about Caitlin Clark, Stephanie White has said these locker-room visits will be somewhat frequent this season. Speaking at the LA Sparks pre-game press conference, White shed light on the major reasons behind this. “I think when you think about the expansion of medical teams in the W, it’s like any other professional team,” White said.
“You have more people on duty and more hands on deck, and you can go back and you can get regular maintenance adjustments. I know everybody’s focused on Caitlin, but our other players are going back to get regular maintenance too. So, yeah, it’s gonna be something that you’re gonna consistently see,” she added.
To understand it better, you’ll have to understand Indiana Fever’s injury dynamics. Alongside Clark, there are a few other players like Lexie Hull, who’s coming off a recent hamstring injury. Even Aliyah Boston, in that regard, came to the season after a lower leg injury. Sophie Cunningham also faced a season-ending knee injury last season while playing in her second season for the Fever.
Because of this, White’s plan to give her players recovery treatment during the game just makes more sense. For the franchise, it’s just another process to keep their players fresh and fit during the game.
Thus, the Indiana Fever and Caitlin Clark will not have to worry about any injury nemesis for now. The team and the coaching staff are working in perfect sync on the players’ recovery as they look forward to their next game against the LA Sparks.
