The last few days must have felt like a dream for Azzi Fudd. Graduating from UConn as the No. 1 pick and making an insane amount of money in the process ($500,000 to be precise). Not only that, but she also gets to pair up with her best friend and partner, Paige Bueckers, after being drafted by the Dallas Wings. Azzi’s ear-to-ear smile while speaking of this reunion leaves nothing to the imagination about the emotions she must be feeling.

“No control over where I get drafted, but it really feels special to play with my best friend again,” came Fudd’s straight-from-the-heart answer as her face beamed with pride, talking about her partner while doing a personal interview.

Best friend? Now that is an understatement, as the duo’s relationship status surfaced, Bueckers called Azzi her girlfriend in July last year, and the internet hasn’t been the same since.

Ever since Fudd and Bueckers have come under the spotlight, their dazzling court presence, coupled with their relationship off it, has garnered attention. More often than not, it has been a tradition where the gossip about their relationship overshadows the activities on court, and this is exactly what happened when a reporter asked Azzi about the public nature of her relationship with Paige, but was immediately interjected by a PR staff member from the Dallas Wings staff.

“I understand why you have to ask that question, but we’re going to respectfully decline from comments on our players’ personal lives,” the representative said.

It was then and there that the matter ended, and the question remained unanswered. Now this has led to a situation that is getting increased attention from the masses. Dallas Wings’ intention is to keep the conversation around basketball so that they keep their players’ private lives protected, as they have bigger matters to deal with.

Wings Look To Address More Important Tasks At Hand

You might wonder what prompted the Dallas Wings PR to behave in the way they did, because by now it is common knowledge that both Azzi Fudd and Paige Bueckers are in a relationship.

But it’s not that simple. The reason the management chose to downplay the relationship was that the Wings need a recovery plan from where they are standing at the moment, and cannot afford distractions. It will be a steep climb from the basement to the top floor, and that is where the Wings management wants to keep its focus.

For Jose Fernandez’s sake, he would hope that both Fudd and Bueckers can rekindle that same magic that they did under Geno Auriemma. After 2023’s semi-final exit against Las Vegas, the team has failed to earn its spot in the playoffs in back-to-back seasons.

A 9-31 finish in 2024 and a 10-34 end in the last season showed the decline the team was going through, and that needed a quick rectification. Wings now hopes that this NCAA championship-winning pair of Fudd and Bueckers could do the trick. They already have a star presence in Arike Ogunbowale in their lineup, who will add to the team’s overall efficiency on the court.

The idea is simple to match up to the scoring level of teams like the Las Vegas Aces, Atlanta Dream, Indiana Fever, and so on. Their defense was the biggest letdown with a 92.1 oppg, which even their attacking gameplay couldn’t compensate for.

The Wings will benefit from Azzi Fudd’s 3-point abilities and her excellent off-ball game, and maybe the next step is eventually finding a truly elite post presence to amplify Bueckers’ game.

This is exactly why now the team is hoping to find its way, and the way to do it is focusing its attention on the on-court action rather than intruding into their personal affairs.

But will that stop prying eyes from swooping into their love life?

While the Wings are determined to keep the focus on basketball, the intense public interest in Fudd and Bueckers’ off-court chemistry guarantees that the line between their personal and professional lives will be the team’s first major challenge before they even play a game together.
