The WNBA’s 30th-anniversary celebration was meant to honor its legends, but the league’s choice for its leading voice has instead sparked a debate about who truly represents its past and future

As part of the celebration campaign, the WNBA shared a video on X, with the caption: “We’ve done a lot in 30 years. The best part? We aren’t done yet. Season 30 starts May 8th.” The clip itself leaned into a forward-looking theme about “raising GOATs,” with Sheryl Swoopes as its lead voice. In it, Swoopes delivers a message about legacy and continuity, framing greatness not just as something achieved, but something nurtured. That the “greatest of all time” isn’t just the past or present; it also includes the players the league is still developing.

According to the WNBA’s full press release, there will be several initiatives tied to this 30th-season milestone. This includes integrated brand campaigns and films, such as the one featuring Sheryl Swoopes, alongside merchandise programs, a WNBA Top 30 Plays content series, and more. As stated in the release, a commemorative Season 30 logo will also appear on courts, game balls, and jerseys throughout the season.

In the words of WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert, “Season 30 arrives at the perfect transformational moment in the league’s history, marking both a defining milestone and the beginning of a new era for the WNBA,” a sentiment underscored by the league’s landmark Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) finalized in March.

Apart from the CBA, this season has also come with two expansion teams, the Portland Fire and the Toronto Tempo, which officially held their Expansion Draft on April 3, 2026. And this growth, according to Cathy Engelbert, is not independent of the “three decades of commitment from players, teams, fans, partners, and investors,” who have contributed to the league in different capacities.

As the engine of the Houston Comets’ four-peat dynasty and a three-time MVP and Defensive Player of the Year, Swoopes’s resume makes her a foundational figure the league would naturally want to highlight.

According to the WNBA press release, this Season 30 celebration will recognize those who built the WNBA. Swoopes definitely seems like a good starting point in this bid. The league is betting that a wave of nostalgia will soon overshadow any current controversies.

Fans React as WNBA Leads 30th Season Celebration With Sheryl Swoopes

While the WNBA’s 30th season celebration campaign is an initiative that naturally sparks excitement, many fans have surprisingly shown mixed reactions. Specifically, much of that attention was towards the league’s choice of Sheryl Swoopes as the face of the campaign.

“Great message, wrong messenger!” one fan wrote. And of course, the reaction hasn’t been all that unwarranted. While Swoopes is undeniably a legend, she’s been a polarizing figure for a new segment of the WNBA fanbase. Most notably, she faced backlash for her criticisms of Caitlin Clark. And that was the exact sentiment a fan expressed when she said, “Did Sheryl Swoopes really just say ‘build others up’? Just certain ones, right, Swoopes?” Another fan, even more direct, said, “It’s a decision to bring in a generational hater as toxic as Swoopes to kick off the season. She sucks as a person.”

Then again, for some fans, the pushback wasn’t even because of her past actions. Some simply believe she does not deserve to be the greatest of all time. As one fan put it, “Nobody cares about the WNBA, but Swoopes is not the goat. Off the top of my head, Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi are more accomplished than Swoopes.”

But still, Swoopes had some defenders as well. Some fans chose to sail their boats alongside the WNBA, reinforcing the claim of Swoopes as the GOAT. “Love Swoopes. The original WNBA goat,” one fan said. Another fan also echoed that sentiment, suggesting the moment was long overdue. “Sheryl Swoopes on the 30-year promotion, get your flowers 🫶🏾,” she wrote.

While the WNBA aims to celebrate its entire history of ‘GOATs,’ the initial backlash suggests the league must first navigate the complicated legacy of the very legends it chooses to put front and center.
