Diamond Miller’s stay in Arlington was cut short by the Wings’ front office’s latest decision, which also comes from a financial standpoint.

Dallas News reporter Myah Taylor has confirmed that the 2023 No. 2 overall pick is being traded to the Connecticut Sun for bringing in center Rayah Marshall to Dallas and also to create salary cap flexibility.

“Wings trade forward Diamond Miller to the Connecticut Sun, and will save $259k for doing so,” the post read.

Originally drafted by the Minnesota Lynx as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2023 WNBA Draft, Diamond Miller was later acquired by the Dallas Wings in a midseason trade in 2025.

Miller struggled to make an impact in her 15 games with the Wings, averaging just 4.0 points and 1.3 rebounds, making her an understandable casualty of a roster overhaul following a dismal 10-34 season.

With this move, the Wings also pulled off a masterstroke to improve their financial cap. For instance, Miller, a player who is going to enter her fifth season, earned a salary of more than $536,588. But Marshall, a second-year player, has a salary of just $277,500, hence freeing $259,000. This leaves more wiggle room for the Wings to capitalize on with more signings in the free agency and also gives them leverage to push a bit more for the players they are sure to bring to their helm.

On the other hand, for the Dallas Wings, Marshall’s addition to the roster also has its own benefit on the court. Indeed, Marshall hasn’t had the best of rookie years to at least vouch for her. But it must be remembered that the Wings roster does need some big players on the court, which Marshall can complement perfectly.

Connecticut Sun’s general manager, Morgan Tuck, echoed the perfect sentiment on why Marshall is such a good addition for off-the-bench depth for the Dallas Wings. “In just a short time, she brought such positive energy and presence every single day. That’s what makes decisions like this so tough. We’re sad to see her go because she’s been such a joy to have on our team. At the same time, we’re really excited for her and this next opportunity,” Tuck said.

Meanwhile, for Miller, the trade gives her a new opportunity to reboot her career once again. With the Connecticut Sun, Miller may pair up with Aaliyah Edwards and Aneesah Marrow and contribute during a brief rebuilding phase the Sun is heading into after missing the playoffs last year. If she can remain healthy for the remainder of the season, Miller’s performance can also raise her stock and increase her game time for the Sun.

Can Diamond Miller’s Trade Hamper the Dallas Wings’ Strength on Court?

Being a No. 2 overall pick in 2023, Diamond Miller’s absence from the roster is alarming for the Dallas roster on paper. But when you dig deeper, it doesn’t make much of a difference. For instance, even during her short spell at the Wings, Miller was never a starter for the team. Miller started only one of her 15 games with the Wings.

A detailed look at her career stats also singles out the fact that Miller has been going through an uncertain patch ever since her rookie year, when she recorded an average of 12.1 points per game. But that’s not even the concern as for a bench player for the Wings, a Miller who is in-rhythm would be worth more than gold.

But her higher salary is where the Wings were suffering. On top of that, the franchise has also cored Arike Ogunbowale, meaning that if she signs the contract, the amount can be no less than the supermax salary. Additionally, the team has also brought in role players like Grace Berger and Li Yueru for the 2026 season, while superstar Paige Bueckers will also return, along with Aziaha James.

These returns will, of course, strain the franchise’s net salary cap, despite the substantial increase in the new CBA. Furthermore, the Wings will also be calling the No. 1 pick in the upcoming WNBA draft on Monday (April 13). Even though the player will get a rookie salary, it naturally adds to the payroll.

From a financial point, this trade has done much more good to the Dallas Wings than harm. On the other hand, it will also give Diamond Miller a new environment to thrive in and help her regain the momentum she carried in her freshman season.
