Cooper Flagg’s rookie campaign with the Dallas Mavericks has been a revelation. Fans knew they bagged a gem when they secured his signature on NBA Draft day, but none of them would have predicted his meteoric rise this campaign. His sensational 49-point game vs. the Charlotte Hornets just foreshadowed what was yet to come as the 19-year-old etched his name in the NBA record books last night.

Flagg battled his way to an epic 51-point outing in Friday night’s matchup vs. the Orlando Magic on home turf. In doing so, he became the only teenager to cross the 50-point mark in an NBA game. The former Duke star was a class above his Mavericks teammates, who struggled to keep up with him. Cooper ended the night with 51 points, six rebounds and three assists. Defensively, he contributed three steals and one block. Yet, he couldn’t prevent Dallas from falling to a 138-127 defeat at the hands of Paolo Banchero & Co.

But those numbers weren’t the only thing that made the game memorable. Flagg got into a heated tiff with the referees after what should have been a foul. Orlando’s Desmond Bane grabbed Flagg’s elbow on a shot attempt, but the officiating crew totally missed it. That left the rookie furious as he went on a barrage at multiple officials, ultimately leading to a technical on himself.

But if that wasn’t enough, Mavs head coach Jason Kidd was also roped into the situation. He exchanged words with the on-court official, calling out their mistake and defending his starboy. But the refs stuck with their decision and got him ejected soon after. Kidd was also forced to leave with small forward Naji Marshall, who was defending his coach.

Their absence might have played a role in Cooper Flagg going berserk with his scoring later on. With his 51-point haul, Flagg is now in elite company alongside the great Michael Jordan and the iconic Allen Iverson as the only three rookies with three+ 40-point games. Though Kidd had to be away, he continued to heap praise on Flagg’s performance and immense potential.

Jason Kidd lauds Cooper Flagg’s heroics, ignoring referee altercation

Jason Kidd has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this week. In the aftermath of the Mark Cuban podcast citing him as one of the key figures in the controversial Luka Doncic trade, Kidd was under pressure from the Mavericks’ passionate fanbase. He had to step up and go above and beyond tonight to shield his young star, and he did so in epic fashion. He stood by his decision by making his case for Flagg winning a coveted title.

“He should be Rookie of the Year,” Kidd told reporters at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. “It’s unbelievable, the country is not watching the same thing that we get to watch on a daily basis. The things that he’s done, he’s in rare air, he’s with the GOAT when you talk about MJ and what he did in his rookie year, and as a teenager.

“Win or lose, his spirit is about winning. Right now we’re not, but as he just said in the locker room, we’re just gonna be that much better come next season.”

In terms of numbers, Flagg leads the Mavs in points scored, assists, rebounds, and steals this campaign. For context, the only other rookie to ever do that was Jordan. There will never be another Michael Jordan, but Cooper Flagg will probably be the closest to becoming such a player.

Yes, the Doncic era was one for the ages and will live long in the memories of the Dallas faithful. But maybe, just maybe, the Cooper Flagg story is the fairytale ending that these fans deserve. For now, just sit back and enjoy the fireworks because this kid is a once-in-a-generation supernova.
