The Indiana Fever aren’t resting on their laurels. With a core of Caitlin Clark and Aaliyah Boston already in place, the front office is making aggressive moves in free agency. The team has gone right away in coring their star player, Kelsey Mitchell, quite early, and now they have set their eyes on a veteran front-court player, who is making quite a stir in the free agency market of late: Monique Billings.
According to reports from basketball journalist Roberta, the Indiana Fever have shown immense interest and is also seemingly quite close to signing Billings, despite a similar approach and a face-off meeting with the New York Liberty. “Monique Billings took a meeting with the New York Liberty but should sign with the Indiana Fever, I’m being told,” the post read.

It must be noted that Billings to the New York Liberty would have been quite an association in itself. The team already features plenty of star power in Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu, and if you add Billings, you will possibly get a championship-contending team for the season. But that’s quite far from a possibility, as Billings is trending more towards the Fever amid this hustling free agency, where every team is putting everything on the line to get their priorities sorted.
In Fever too, Billings will add to a decorated roster featuring the likes of Caitlin Clark, Kelsey Mitchell, and Aaliyah Boston. Clark and Boston will return. Meanwhile, the franchise has also used its core designation on Kelsey Mitchell, meaning she can also possibly stay at the helm for the 2026 season with a supermax one-year contract.
And if the move eventually materializes, Billings’ on-court prowess will just add to this strong core of the Indiana Fever. For context, Billings has spent most of her pro career as a role player on the bench. Be it in Atlanta Dream or Golden State Valkyries, Billings has never got that comfort of being a starter. Nevertheless, she has put those limited minutes quite well.
Her career averages include 6.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 0.7 steals. This reflects the impact that Billings can have on the court, even in the brief spells she gets. As a result, this can help the Fever to take advantage of the court, even when their regular starters in Boston and Clark aren’t on the court. In her last season as well for the Valkyries, Billings contributed with 7.3 ppg and 4.5 rebounds, despite suffering an ankle injury that forced her to miss 14 games.
But in the little time we’ve seen of her in the WNBA offseason, Billings has never missed a beat. For instance, she played for the US National team in qualifiers for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Puerto Rico.

On a star-studded team, Billings also raised her ceiling, recording 6.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.6 blocks. Furthermore, in this event, Billings also linked up with Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark. The duo bonded pretty well on the court, with Clark occasionally finding Billings near the paint. Their chemistry blossomed during the campaign, culminating in an unbeaten run for Team USA in the tournament.
As a result, this chemistry will also be prevalent in the Indiana Fever if the signing materializes. But Billings’ move to Indiana isn’t just about chemistry as it fixes several other important things beyond that as well.
Monique Billings Can Be a Timely Addition for the Indiana Fever to Enhance Their Team Depth
Being an unrestricted free agent, Billings won’t face any major caveats in signing with the Indiana Fever. And neither can the Golden State Valkyries use any leverage to demand fair compensation from the Fever, as they haven’t cored Billings for the season. This means the signing won’t deplete the Fever’s salary cap, making it quite feasible.
This signing doesn’t just have an on-court advantage; context matters, too. For instance, Fever’s most formidable off-the-bench player, Lexie Hull, is uncertain to return to the team. The Indiana Fever has submitted a reserved qualifying offer to Hull, but the latest updates suggest she is attending free agency meetings, hinting that she is considering offers outside the Fever. It means that if she gets an offer that the Fever can’t possibly match, the team would lose an important offensive player from the bench.
Now, it’s quite clear that Billings and Hull play in very different positions and have contrasting skill sets. But it must be remembered that their profiles are quite the same- both are role players, and Billings’ specialty from the bench doesn’t need further introduction. As a result, it can be a good replacement for Hull, considering the team’s bench depth.
Furthermore, the Indiana Fever also doesn’t have many frontcourt options available to complement Aaliyah Boston, except for youngster Mikayla Timpson. Thus, Billings can seamlessly fit into that role from the bench or can even pair alongside Boston for the upcoming season. Thus, with the signing of Monique Billings, the Indiana Fever will have the opportunity to slay several demons in the season.
But for now, we’ll have to play the waiting game on which side Billings aligns with during this free agency window ahead of the 2026 season. The dates to officially sign players tip off on Saturday, April 11.
